Wine Storage FAQs Frequently Asked Questions About Storing Wine

Experts in Wine Storage, Wine Cooling and Wine Racking

Do I need a single temperature cabinet or a dual temperature cabinet ?

If you want the wines to be at ready to serve temperature, choose a dual temperature cabinet. The upper compartment is for whites and champagnes and can be set as low as 5 degrees Celsius whilst the lower compartment is for reds and can be set from 12 to 22 degrees Celsius. We recommend setting the lower compartment to 6 degrees and the upper compartment to 16.

If you want the wines to be a perfect cellar temperature, 12 degrees Celsius, choose a single temperature cabinet. All wines, reds, whites and sparkling wines should be kept at a steady 12 degrees Celsius to reach perfect maturity and once matured, to stay in perfect condition.

In the Vin Garde range there are 3 sizes of dual temperature cabinet and 3 sizes of single temperature cabinet.

Can I store all bottle types on the shelves ?

The Vin Garde models are equipped with a mixture of sliding shelves and sliding display shelves. Both shelf types will accommodate Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone, Alsace and even some champagne bottles (Veuve Cliquot and Laurent Perrier, for example). We say some, but not all, champagne bottles because some champagne marques come in extraordinarily thick bottles. For these thicker bottles you can place them on the base shelf, where the cabinet is only one bottle deep or on any of the standard shelves if you remove the shelf above.

How should I store maturing cases of champagne or sparkling wine?
The bottles should be laid down, at cellar temperature.

What is the difference between a Cavispace and Espace walk in wine cellar?
The Cavispace wine cellar has a cooling unit only (no heating function like the Espace), so it can only be kept inside the home, not in a garage or outhouse. Cavispace racks are static racks for cases and/or bottles while the Espace shelves can slide out.

What preparation or tools are required for installation?
None – a screwdriver is the only tool required.

How much does the Wine Storage Solutions installation service cost?
This depends on which model you choose. For instance, installation of the Espace 900 and Cavispace are £240.00 (excluding VAT).

Does it matter if my walk in wine cellar is not full at all times?
No, although it is better to be full or nearly full, as the thermal mass means that the cellar cooling unit doesn’t have to run for too long.

Do walk in wine cellars have interior lighting?
Yes – one battery-powered light is supplied with Cavispace and two for Espace 900 walk in wine cellar.

Will my walk in wine cellars come fitted with a lock?
Yes

What is a split-system wine cellar conditioner?
The evaporator is inside the cellar and the condensing unit is outside the building, with the two connected by copper piping. The evaporator needs to be connected to a drain. There are options to conceal the evaporator in a ceiling void or behind a wall or concealed by furniture inside the cellar.

Can a wine cellar conditioner be fitted in my existing wine cellar or storage area?
Yes, but this leads to many questions regarding what work needs to be done and drilling through walls.

Who can install my wine cellar conditioner?
For split-system installations we can supply an engineer to fit the entire system.

Do I need a wine cellar conditioner?
Not if the cellar temperature is a steady 12C. Otherwise, yes.

My cellar is not sealed like a walk in wine cellar: will a cellar conditioner be effective?
We can compensate for poorly insulated rooms but it involves using more powerful equipment which is costlier to purchase and run.

How high can wine racking safely be stacked?
The wine racking should be secured to the wall (this doesn’t need to be load bearing).
