Friax cellar conditioners – temperature & humidity control

Almost any space can be converted into a wine cellar to ensure your prized vintages reach perfect maturity and stay in peak condition.

Friax split-systems provide perfect temperature and humidity. Normally a cellar should be insulated to around 60mm all around but where this is not possible we can incorporate more powerful systems to compensate.

Friax Wine Cellar Conditioners

The condensing unit is located outside the building and the evaporator is located inside or near the cellar. There are 3 types of evaporator:-

Attached to the ceiling or wall, concealed in a false ceiling, horizontally mounted or concealed in a nearby room or inside the cellar and concealed with a decorative surround.

In the latter two options, the evaporator cannot be seen – only the decorative grilles on the ceiling or wall are visible.

The hygrometry function requires a water supply to the evaporator point. If the area to be cellar conditioned is an unheated building, the heating function ensures that the set temperature is maintained year-round, regardless of the temperatures outdoors.

Single temperature wine cabinets or multi temperature wine cabinets?

How to decide between a single temperature Wime cabinet or multi temperature wine cabinet

Transtherm wine storage cabinets from Groupe Eurocave of France are available in 3 different formats - Single temperature, 3-temperature and multi-temperature and customers sometimes cannot decide which best suits their requirements.

It is a common misconception that different types of wine should be cellared at different temperatures - not so. All wines should be cellared at around 12 degrees Celsius. This will allow all types of wine - red, white, champagne etc, to reach perfect maturity and once there, to stay in peak condition for as long as possible.

Single temperature wine cabinets are designed to keep all wines at the same temperature, usually 12 degrees Celsius, cellar temperature. With Transtherm single temperature cabinets, the temperature can be set at any temperature between 6 - 18 degrees Celsius. This is to allow a restauranteur to keep all whites/champagnes at 6 degrees or all reds at 17 degrees - serving temperatures but it is important to note that it has to be one or the other temperature as only 1 temperature can be set.

The 3-temperature wine cabinet 'Castel' has 3 different temperature zones:- A compartment at the top which allows up to 11 reds to be kept at 17 degrees Celsius A compartment at the bottom which allows up to 17 whites to be kept at 7 degrees The large central area which is for storing reds and whites at cellar temperature - 12 degrees Celsius.

Multi-temperature wine cabinets are open-plan, like the single-temperature cabinets, but the temperature within is 7 degrees Celsius at the bottom, graduating to 17 degrees at the top. The idea is to keep all types of wine at their respective perfect serving temperatures. This has been more popular in France and some other European countries than in the UK where I find restauranteurs prefer only 2 temperatures - 6 degrees for the whites and 17 degrees for the reds.

What is the difference between a wine fridge and an ordinary fridge?

Transtherm wine cabinet v an ordinary fridge

Here at Wine Storage Solutions Ltd, we are often asked questions such as;

"What is the difference between a Wine Fridge and an ordinary fridge?"

"Why buy a wine storage cabinet, rather than an ordinary fridge?"

"Why are wine fridges more expensive that standard fridges?"

"Why not just keep wine in a normal fridge rather than a wine fridge?"

Transtherm wine storage cabinets, manufactured by Groupe Eurocave of France for over 30 years, have been designed to perfectly replicate those conditions found in a traditional wine cellar – steady 12 degrees Celsius temperature, humidity 50 – 80%, dark and vibration-free.

Steady temperature – fluctuation in temperature is wine’s worst enemy. Our cabinets maintain 12 degrees throughout (set temperature can be adjusted between 6 – 18 degrees Celsius), which is perfect for storing reds and whites long-term. There is even a heating function which ensures that the temperature remains steady at 12 degrees even if the cabinet is located in a garage or outhouse during winter months. Beware of some manufacturers who claim to employ a “Winter function” which is no more than a device to prevent the compressor from freezing.

Humidity – the thermal pump design used in Transtherm cabinets ensures that humidity is kept between 50 – 80% to ensure that the corks don’t dry out. As fresh air is introduced into the cabinet when the door is open, the moisture in the air meets the cooling plate at the rear of the cabinet. When the compressor cycle ends, the moisture falls as small water droplets and any excess is channelled through the cabinet and evaporated using the heat from the compressor. Thus a healthy humidity level is maintained within the cabinet.

Darkness – Transtherm cabinets are available in solid door and glass door options. Glass doors are now more popular than ever. The glass doors are UV-protected to ensure that no harmful sunlight will damage the wines within.

Vibration-free – The compressor is mounted on rubber shocks to prevent any vibration passing through to the cabinet. The sliding racks are mounted on rollers, creating hardly any friction and can be slid in and out with just one finger.

Transtherm wine cabinets are the most competitively priced high quality wine cabinets on the market today.

Solid oak wine racking with LED lighting

Thursday 19 March 2016

LED lighting to enhance solid oak wine racking.
Wine Storage Solutions have introduced an option to include LED lighting in their solid oak wine racks.

Any rack or display can be enhanced by the introduction of LED lighting.

Roy Wilson, Managing Director of Wine Storage Solutions Ltd, says "To make the lighting more discreet, we cut channels into the rack to obscure the LED strip. This allows the light to shine down from the top of the rack and also from the top of the case racks lower down. This can have a very pleasing effect on the eye. A dimmer function allows our customers to control the intensity of the light”.
